Now when He approached Bethphage and Bethany, at the place called the Mount of Olives, He sent two of the disciples, telling them, “Go to the village ahead of you. When you enter it, you will find a colt tied there that has never been ridden. Untie it and bring it here. If anyone asks you, “Why are you untying it?” just say “The Lord needs it”. So those who were sent ahead found it exactly as He had told them. As they were untying the colt, its owners asked them, “Why are you untying that colt?”. They replied, “The Lord needs it” - Luke 19:29-34
This moment paints the picture of the beginning of the end of Jesus’s earthly ministry. He comes to Jerusalem in an unusual display, riding on the offspring of a horse, barely strong enough or experienced enough to carry the weight of a man. With awkward, wobbly teenage legs, the cloaks that lined the streets softened the steps of this naive animal, entirely unaware of the honor it had of carrying the king of heaven and earth on its back.
Jesus’s signature move was using the last, the lost, and the least to display the glory of God. His disciples were some of the most dispised characters in society. He spent his time with those ostracized from communities for their bodily illnesses. He took a meager serving of food and used it to feed crowds of listeners. He took a colt, the offspring of a horse, to carry Him into His final days of ministry in Jerusalem.
Jesus takes the ordinary and makes it extraordinary.
There are many times in life where I feel like the colt. I look out into the distance and seee my friends and family running wild and free. They are strong and bold, able to carry the weight of the world on their shoulders, while I stand tied up, still trying to keep my feet on the ground. Sometimes I feel like the last choice, as people remind me of my youth and my small stature. I think there are times when we all feel this way. The growing pains of life are real, and it is easy to feel alone in those times of growth, but this story is a reminder that God uses us no matter where we are in our journey. He used a young girl to bring life to the savior of the world. He used one of the youngest sons of Jacob to bring the nation of Israel safely to Egypt in a time of famine. He use a young boy to face off a giant in battle and come out victorious, and he used an infant to bring salvation and redemption to the world. When it comes to God’s will, there is nothing we can do that will disqualify us from being able to carry out His will. He created us each for a purpose, and He will use us wherever we are to Cary out that purpose. The simple response of the disciples in an inspiring reminder that we need no further justification. That “The Lord needs it”. When God calls us to carry out His will, remember that He chose you for a reason
